Whereas the downtown of Dundalk is an ongoing concern of the municipality, its residents and Community groups; and Whereas the Township and staff have done its best through the Strategic Plan and Community Improvement Plan for improvements; and Whereas outside investors are major players in both residential and more importantly commercial properties; and Whereas because of this face many buildings are left vacant to the point of dereliction; and Whereas the Township has removed the vacancy tax rebate and other cities and municipalities are adding 1-2% levies over and above the standard tax rates to vacant buildings, both residential and commercial; Now therefore be it resolved that Council direct staff to research the feasibility of a 1-2% additional levy for vacant commercial and residential properties, before the end of 2024, and if legal and applicable to place all monies received from 2024 levies and beyond to be applied to the Economic Development budget line as reserves or to be specifically earmarked for Downtown revitalization.
